🌟 Parent FAQs — The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™ 🌟

First, what IS The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™?

The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™ is a fun, screen-free enrichment program hosted on the Charleston peninsula designed to help children ages 6–11 strengthen their spelling, vocabulary, penmanship, cursive writing, and creative writing skills. Through hands-on activities, storytelling, and guided practice, students build confidence as communicators while exploring language in a playful, supportive environment. Small class sizes, thoughtful materials, and an encouraging atmosphere make each session engaging, productive, and joyful for every learner.

What age group is this program for?

The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™ is designed for students ages 6–11, divided into groups by age or skill level when possible. This is the ideal stage for strengthening handwriting, grammar, spelling patterns, vocabulary development, and writing confidence.

How is this different from tutoring?

This is not traditional tutoring.
The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™ offers a structured, curriculum-based enrichment program where each session builds on the last. Students learn new vocabulary, spelling patterns, grammar skills, and penmanship — then apply them through handwritten creative writing assignments.

Do students need to be struggling with writing or spelling to benefit?

Not at all.
This program is ideal for:

  • students who enjoy writing and want more practice,

  • students who need stronger foundations in spelling, penmanship, or vocabulary,

  • homeschool learners who want a well-rounded language arts supplement, and

  • students who thrive with hands-on, screen-free learning.

Is this program suitable for homeschool students?

Absolutely!
The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™ offers daytime and evening sessions, flexible scheduling, and a structured curriculum that fits perfectly within homeschool requirements. Many families use it as part of their Language Arts credit.

What do students do in each session?

Each 2-hour session includes:

  • introduction of new vocabulary + spelling patterns

  • handwriting practice and penmanship refinement

  • guided creative writing using the new words

  • gentle, mastery-focused “check-in tests”

  • review and feedback on the previous week’s writing

Students receive a personal notebook that we add to each week — creating a beautiful record of growth.

Are the tests graded?

No.
The weekly check-ins are zero-pressure assessments designed to build confidence and improve test-taking familiarity. They show progress, not performance.

What materials are needed?

None!
All materials — notebooks, worksheets, writing tools, and reference sheets — are included. Students only need to bring themselves and a willingness to write.

How big are the classes?

Small enough to feel personal, structured, and calm:

  • 2–6 students per group
This allows for individual attention while still fostering collaborative energy.

How much does it cost?

  • 8 sessions: $400

  • At 2 hours per session, once per week, for 8 weeks, that equates to $25/hour for quality learning time that helps support a valuable foundation for future growth and success.

  • Payment is due at the time of booking. All materials included, as well as light snacks and bonus workshop gifts (t-shirt, bag, etc.).

What if my child misses a session?

Sessions are nonrefundable, but if you give at least 24 hours notice, we do our best to offer a make-up opportunity if space is available in another session that week.

Will my child receive individualized attention?

Yes.
With our purposefully small groups, each student receives personalized guidance, weekly writing review, and tailored vocabulary or grammar support based on their needs.

Is this aligned with state standards?

The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™ aligns with common language arts expectations for elementary grades — but goes deeper in areas schools often don’t emphasize, like penmanship, creative synthesis, and individualized writing feedback.

Is the program screen-free?

Yes — intentionally.
Research consistently shows that handwriting improves memory, creativity, language retention, and focus. Students benefit enormously from unplugged learning time.

Can this help with dyslexia or ADHD?

While The Quirky Pickle Language Lab™ is not a specialized therapeutic program, many students with learning differences thrive due to:

  • predictable structure

  • multi-sensory handwritten learning

  • small class size

  • gentle pacing

  • individualized guidance

Parents are encouraged to discuss needs ahead of time so accommodations can be made where reasonable.

When do sessions begin?

New sessions start January 2026, with options for different days, times, and age groups.
